  • AC issue at 55K miles on my Odyssey

By Pat on Friday, June 28, 2019

I purchased 2016 Honda Odyssey (in Aug 2016) and drove it for 2 Years 10 Months (as of June 2019). It had 55K miles on it and AC started blowing hot air. Took it to the Honda dealership and he said the AC Compressor and Dryer needs to be replaced which cost me $1500. While such repairs are usually covered under 3Year/36K miles, my Odyssey exceeded the mileage. This makes me think that Honda's reliability totally depends on luck, Not every honda gives your piece of mind and lower maintenance costs!

This is our second Odessey ; first was a 2005 that performed reasonably well so we decided to upgrade to a Honda certified 2015 EX-L in 2017. We have not had any actual mechanical issues until this month, but from the beginning the transmission shifts hard and jerky in the first and second gear. ( Otherwise, up til now, the car has been a pleasure to own. ) We were somewhat aware of this complaint going into it, but upon researching that, found actualy few instances of major tranny repairs or replacement, it was low. We also had a similar observation in our prior Odessey, but it never resulted in any meaningful tranny repairs. So just an annoyance. The recent mechanical issues are ones that I personally dont think should be happening in the first 80 to 100k miles: last week a seized front tie rod replacement, and then this week, an emergency/parking brake cable failed, which caused the brakes to not release from the drum. This caused immense heat friction which in turn warped the drum - so now a $1,100.00 repair. We have spent $2400 on this van in two weeks. Albeit some of that cost was for wearable parts (brake pads and two new tires), this has got me feeling a bit gun shy on keeping this car. I think I might sell it while it still is under its certififed warranty (which only covers engine and drive train) and maybe try out the re-designed 2018 Odessey with the 9 speed transmission (although I see reviews indicating it has hard shift issues as well.)

We (2 people) have lived in this van for 10 months and 30,000 miles traveling the US and Canada. We have been amazed at the 21mpg average gas milage, it's ability to climb mountains (and get back down), handling in high winds and carrying a fairly high load (including a thule and kayak on the roof). Makes it hard to want to move on up to a motorhome (except that a motorhome has a toilet!)
